Dearborn Schools is starting a community task force to look at the Read by Third Grade law.
The law, officially known as Public Law 306 (October 2016), will require that third grade students who are more than a year below grade level on the English part of their M-STEP be recommended to repeat third grade. Retention recommendations will start with the current second graders.
The district has been planning for the new law since its passage, including extra training for teachers, additional small group instruction for lagging students, extra summer school and tutoring programs, and more.
Now, the district is inviting parents and community members to join the district task force to strengthen the planning process and to ensure that the community is informed and engaged in the success of every student.
If you would like to participate, please complete the survey. The first meeting is Jan. 10 at 4 p.m.
