Waste Free Lunch Wednesday January 25th, 2012

Waste-Free Lunch Tips:

•  Sandwiches in reusable containers.

•  Whole fruits without packaging.

•  Drinks in containers that can be reused, such as a thermos, or  recycled, such as a can.

•  Snacks purchased in bulk and brought in reusable containers.

•  Reusable ice packs.

•  Individually wrapped snacks

•  Plastic baggies that are not reusable

•  Disposable forks and spoons

•  Straws

Did you know that the on average Whitmore Bolles Elementary produces nine bags of garbage per day in our cafeteria alone?  That’s 45 bags each week!

On January 25, 2012 our students will take the WASTE FREE LUNCH DAY CHALLENGE!  Students will be asked to bring lunches from home that include as many items as possible that can be eaten, reused or recycled and as few items as possible that must be thrown away.  Since the 25th also happens to be a late start Wednesday, students will be able to use the extra time in the morning to plan and pack their ‘Earth friendly’  lunch!  Remember….the least amount of garbage the better!

You can help your child pack his or her waste-free lunch by including only what your student can eat, using reusable containers or bags, or buying non-perishable foods in bulk. Also remember, if you pack any items that need refrigeration make sure you include a reusable ice pack to keep the items fresh.

At the end of our January waste free lunch day challenge, we will announce how many bags of garbage were produced that day and hopefully we will see a big difference!  Look for more waste free lunch day announcements in the upcoming months.  Together we can make a difference!

Thank you for your support, and please help make  January 25th, 2012 a successful waste-free lunch day!
